This trip is truly paradise found. The enchanting journey takes us deep into the dense jungles of Chagres where the Embera Indians have lived for century s. Our adventure begins with a one-hour ride up the river in dugout canoes, the Embera tradition, hand carved boats.
During the tranquil journey through the lush rainforest, alive with sounds and radiant flora and fauna, we will negotiate rapids and cross the 25 square kilometers lake Alajuela, where the first vestiges of human presence on the isthmus were found {dating back 11,000 years} |

Vhile you are there, you can experience the Canopy Tour along the waterfall of El Macho. Ride in a gondola supported by cables through the canopy of trees for a breathtaking panoramic view of the great rainforest. Or enjoy a scenic ride on horseback. Be sure to visit the painted stone, an enormous stone petroglyph with strange images and symbols.
Some say it is an ancient map of the region. Finally, visit El Nispero, a Zoo where people takes care of some of the endemic species after they were found injured in the forest. This zoo also has a unique collection of orchids. Here, you will admire the golden frogs and the squared trees, both endangered species.

Barro Colorado Island is a living tropical laboratory run by the Smithsonian Institute of Tropical Research. It hosts an amazing 381 bird species, 121 mammal species and 1,316 plant species, Barro Colorado Island (BCI), a 1,500-hectare island, is STRI's primary site for the study of lowland moist tropical forests. |

Together with five adjacent peninsulas, BCI forms the 5,400-hectare Barro Colorado Nature Monument (BCNM), which is located in the middle of the Panama Canal. Established in April 17, 1923, BCNM and has been administered by the Smithsonian since 1946. We welcome around 200 scientists from around the world every year.
